General Motors (GM) has officially announced that its electric vehicles will begin integrating the NACS (North American Charging Standard) charging port starting with the 2026 model year. The 2026 Cadillac Optiq will be the brand’s first model to natively feature this port, without the need for an adapter. This transition marks a major milestone in Cadillac’s EV user experience, making charging smoother, simpler, and more accessible.

The NACS standard, officially recognized under SAE J3400 in December 2023, combines AC and DC charging in a single compact connector. Inspired by Tesla’s original design, this connector was developed to streamline the charging process, particularly thanks to Tesla’s vast Supercharger network, known for its superior reliability compared to traditional CCS infrastructure.

NACS compatibility and benefits for drivers

Since September 2024, GM drivers, including Cadillac owners, have been able to access Tesla Superchargers using a GM-approved NACS adapter. This adapter works with models equipped with the CCS port and grants access to more than 17,800 Tesla fast-charging stations across Canada and the United States. GM Canada also highlights that Cadillac EVs can tap into an ecosystem of over 214,000 public charging stations, accessible through the dedicated mobile app or OnStar, to easily locate, start, and pay for charging sessions.

With the native integration of the NACS port, the 2026 Optiq will gain direct access to Tesla Superchargers, making the charging process even more seamless. Current data shows that the Optiq can add up to 127 kilometers (79 miles) of range in just 10 minutes on a DC fast charger. This level of efficiency directly enhances driver comfort, reducing the stress of planning charging stops and allowing for a quick return to full range—especially useful during long highway trips.

Why Cadillac is adopting the NACS connector

Cadillac is following a growing trend across the North American EV industry. Major automakers such as Ford, Volvo, Rivian, Mercedes-Benz, and Honda have already begun their transition to NACS. GM, for its part, made its vehicles compatible with Superchargers in 2024 through the adapter, and plans full, direct integration of the NACS port starting in 2026.

The adoption is driven by several advantages. NACS stands out for its ease of use: one single connector supports all types of charging, and it is more compact and ergonomic than CCS. It also offers direct access to one of the most reliable and widespread charging networks in North America. Finally, the charging experience becomes fully integrated, with navigation, payment, and session management controlled from the vehicle’s screen or a mobile app.

These benefits reinforce Cadillac’s strategic decision to adopt the standard, strengthening its position in the electric vehicle market.

The future of electric charging at Cadillac

The 2026 Cadillac Optiq paves the way for this new charging era, being the first Cadillac model to feature the NACS port as standard. Its high-performance version, the 2026 Optiq-V, will also gain this compatibility. This shift aligns with GM’s strategy to equip all its EVs with the NACS standard after 2025.

Other Cadillac models such as the Lyriq, Lyriq-V, and the upcoming Vistiq will retain the CCS port for now, but can already access the Supercharger network using the supplied adapter. As for the Escalade IQ and the ultra-luxury Celestiq sedan, their market debut is imminent, and while the integration of the NACS port hasn’t yet been confirmed, all signs suggest they will follow this technological evolution.

For buyers, this means that more Cadillac models will offer NACS compatibility starting in 2026. The transition to a broader charging infrastructure will therefore be progressive and seamless, with a reduced reliance on adapters. This will allow future drivers to embrace electric mobility with greater confidence and peace of mind.
